Since 1987, Gilead Sciences has worked to discover, develop and commercialize medications to advance the care of patients suffering from life-threatening diseases in areas of unmet medical need.  Established in 2005, the Gilead Foundation is a non-profit organization that seeks to improve access to healthcare for people worldwide, through targeted programs in education for healthcare professionals and community outreach.  The Gilead Masters of science in Bioinformatics Program at the Infectious Diseases Institute; College of Health Sciences Makerere University was designed to provide opportunities for training in MSc in Bioinformatics at a University with well-developed Bioinformatics training program. 

The scholarship funds the tuition, stipend and fees associated with one years of the training program. After the training, the scholar will contribute to the growth and establishment of bioinformatics-driven research in Infectious Diseases Research and establishment of bioinformatics working group at the Infectious Diseases Institute. 

The successful scholar will be bonded to serve at the Institute for a period of not less than 36 months.

The mission of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to “Strengthen Health Systems in Africa with strong emphasis on Infectious Diseases through Research and Capacity Development”. IDI has five operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment, Training, Research, and Outreach programmes.

As part of its comprehensive HIV/AIDS services, the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) offers free Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision for HIV prevention in the Mid-Western and West Nile regions of Uganda.
