Deputy Head of Training

Walter Joseph Arinaitwe is the Deputy Head of the Training and Capacity Development Department of the Infectious Diseases Institute. He is a pharmacist by training with over seven years’ experience in eHealth and eLearning for health worker capacity building and systems strengthening. He manages pharmacy-related trainings at IDI with specific focus on HIV clinical pharmacy and strengthening of supply chain management systems. He is responsible for developing innovative and cost-effective capacity building approaches that leverage available technology, resources and IDI’s network of infectious diseases experts for sustainable health worker training.

He is the head of the Learning Innovations Centre (LIC) which houses the Advanced Treatment Information Centre (ATIC) and IDI’s virtual learning environment (VLE) and oversees strategic partnerships for optimal growth and utilisation of ATIC and the VLE. Currently ATIC provides real-time support to frontline health workers in the clinical management of patients, interactive SMS-based solutions for post training support and knowledge retention assessment and support to IDI projects and partners with implementation of activities. The VLE provides online training to both local and international health workers through open access educational resources such as online courses, case studies and the latest treatment guidelines for a number of infectious diseases from the Uganda Ministry of Health and World Health Organisation.
