Dr. Alex M. Muganzi holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) and a Master’s in Public Health Degree (MPH). He also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management. He is a two-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe HIV/AIDS Fellowship for International Health Care Workers (Cornell University, New York, USA).  He has attended the Executive Leadership Program at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, among many other additional certificate courses.

Dr. Muganzi Joined IDI in 2004 as a senior Medical officer in the Prevention, Care and Treatment Programme at IDI Mulago. From 2007 to 2010, he served as Project Manager for the IDI/KCCA HIV/AIDS Capacity Building project and then later moved to Programme manager for the expanded IDI-Kibaale-Kiboga Project. These projects supported HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services using a health systems strengthening approach.

In October 2010, he was appointed Head of the IDI Outreach Department, a position he holds to date. Under the Outreach department, he provides overall senior program management oversight for the implementation of comprehensive HIV/AIDS and public health programs across different regions in Uganda including Kampala region, Mid-Western Uganda and the whole of West Nile region among other roles. These programs provide support for over 190,000 active clients on antiretroviral therapy. He has also provided oversight for the “Saving Mothers Giving Life (SMGL) project among others and has previously served as Principal Investigator for key HIV evaluation studies which provide critical lessons for policy decisions.

Dr Muganzi represents Africa on the International AIDS Society (IAS) Governing Council (2010-2018).  In this role, he advocates for key strategic policies and priorities for the Africa region aimed at contributing towards HIV epidemic control. He is also alternate member of the Technical Review Panel (TRP) for the Global Fund to Fight HIV, TB and Malaria.

His work involving managing several large scale public health management and development programs over the years has exposed him to diverse rural and urban settings and the global Public Health community. He possesses demonstrable health system strengthening support experience both in urban and rural settings.
