Maternal and Child Health

With support from the Ugandan Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, IDI is working in collaboration with its partners in over 60 districts of Uganda to build the capacity of health facilities to scale up maternal and child health services and HIV and non-HIV services in the district health facilities.

In partnership with key district stakeholders and opinion leaders, district health workers, community-based organisations (CBOs) and Village Health teams (VHT), IDI has contributed to increased demand for maternal and child health services across the districts through the provision of:

  • Training and mentorship to health workers
  • Support for the health care work force to provide critical HIV services; EID; comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care (CEmoNC) and MCH services
  • Renovations of health facilities to improve and create additional space for maternity services (including mothers waiting sheds)
  • Ambulatory services (including motor vehicle and motorcycle ambulances); and
  • Transport vouchers to mother-baby pairs.

This has ultimately contributed to the reduction of maternal mortality in the supported districts. IDI is also supporting interventions towards improved neonatal care in Kibaale district including set up, equipping and functionalisation of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kagadi Hospital.

Furthermore, IDI has also worked with different funders to construct and equip maternity waiting shades in Kiboga (at Bukomero HCIV and Muwanga HCIII), Kyankwanzi (at Ntwetwe HCIV) and Kibaale districts (Kagadi Hospital, Kakumiro, Kakindo, Kibaale, and Kyaterekera Health Centres among many others) to improve MCH services for at risk pregnant mothers.
