In January 2012, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) funding for a collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and other U.S. Government (USG) agencies and implementing partners to implement a one-year pilot project, Saving Mothers Giving Life (SMGL) aimed at reducing maternal mortality and neonatal rates by 50% in the four districts of Kibaale, Kabarole, Kyenjojo and Kamwenge.
