The annual INTEREST Conference is the premier scientific conference for HIV in Africa. It brings together scientists involved in HIV treatment, pathogenesis, and prevention research from around the world.
The Annual Health Innovations Conference, now in its third year, was born of a need to create collaborations and partnerships around health. Hosted by The Ugandan Academy for Health Innovation, a hub which sits within the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), the conference seeks to harness new, emerging and all capable technologies to improve the quality and access to healthcare in Uganda and the region at large.
The Uganda Minister of Health Rt. Hon. Dr Jane Ruth Aceng accompanied by the WHO Country Representative Dr. Yonas Tegegn Woldemariam and the IDI-Makerere Executive Director, Dr Andrew Kambugu commissioned the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital
With funding from Resolve to Save Lives, IDI Global Health Security program in collaboration with World Health Organisation & Makerere University Water Reed Project supported the training of mentors in Buvuma District in support of Ministry of Health National Action Plan for IPC for COVID-19
IDI renovated the waiting area at Kitebi Health Centre III to create space for research study programmes, increase a spacious environment for counselling, and create harmony for service delivery.
The Health System Strengthening programme handed over two ART facilities at Alwi Health Centre III in Pakwach District and Okollo Health Centre III in Madi Okollo District to the respective district leadership.
IDI held her inaugural Science Fair on 12th February 2020 at the IDI McKinnell Knowledge Centre, Makerere University main campus.
When Dr Andrew Kambugu became the Sande-McKinnell Director of the Infectious Diseases Institute in June of 2018, having received the mantle from Richard Brough, one of his first deeds in office was to a long missive to All Staff about his 15 year IDI journey and his passion to lead the many teams in strengthening health systems.
On Thursday 13th of February, the Core lab under the Laboratory Programme at the Infectious Diseases Institute in Mulago hosted a tour around its facilities in a bid to present its achievements. The tour also presented an opportunity to create awareness of the services offered there and their contribution towards patient safety through quality laboratory service delivery.
The Health Innovations Conference will create opportunities to initiate collaborative efforts in Health Innovation with representatives from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Clarke Group, CryptoSavannah, Case Hospital, Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Andela Uganda and Janssen, the Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson and Johnson. It will be attended by members of various fields such as innovations, health, last mile health and bioinformatics.
On October 3, 2017 in Johannesburg South Africa, the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) launched an Alumni network whose goal is to foster Excellence and Collaboration in the next generation of researchers.

On June 28 in Masindi district and on June 29, 2017 in Hoima district, the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) organized and held the second Annual Performance Review meeting for its Western Region Comprehensive HIV/AIDS project funded by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading infectious killer diseases worldwide, taking over 1.5 million lives per year. Treatment of TB patients lasts at least six months and can cause serious side effects making it difficult for patients to adhere.
